Jean-Michel Basquiat: do one thing and do it well
If “playing the Art Game” means a schmoozy, more-dutiful-than-fun drag of a social outing, perhaps you’d prefer to throw your money at art historian James Cahill and illustrator Mikkel Sommer’s new card game and defend the honour of your favourite artist from home. Launching on September 1st (you can preorder the game here), The Art Game: Artists’ Trump Cards is a 32-card deck of your favourite blockbuster artists, each ranked out of 100 in categories like influence . Picasso, of course, ranks highly, and “shock of the new” factor, where Aleksandr Rodchenko, father of graphic designer, is given a near-perfect score.
Game play is pretty straightforward: pit one artist from your hand against someone else’s to win more cards. Not much strategy involved, but we suspect that the ranking system will be a hit, or at least a talking point, for art history buffs and enthusiasts. If anything, it’s a great opportunity to keep that argument about Banksy’s merit, or lack thereof, alive and heated.
