In a rousing nod to the importance of publications in the arts, Carbon Paper has teamed up with Art Metropole to present a collection of Canadian periodicals, art multiples and performances in the Ryerson Art space at the Gladstone Hotel called Shelf Life. From March 19th-29th, you are invited to visit the library and flip through C Magazine, Bad Day Magazine, Inuit Art Quarterly and Carousel, among others.
Co-founded by Gemma Warren and Vanessa Runions, Carbon Paper is a free art magazine that’s available at several art outlets across the Toronto. It offers a stage for debates and dialogues, while using humor and humility, self-proclaiming to be an answer to the call for more criticality and conversation in culture. The collaborative project Shelf Life showcases other art publications as well as a space to enjoy them.
The publications were handpicked by a group of local artists, writers and curators, who lovingly explain their choice on a panel displayed beside their selected publication. The curated nature reduced the anxiety that so often comes with too many good choices. They included publications that have long since disappeared as printed content is becoming increasingly obsolete despite loyal patrons.
If you’ve been to Art Metropole, you’ll recognize the signature minimal shelves and magazines leaning against the wall echoed at the Gladstone Hotel venue. At the opening party, which also featured a K-TOWN karaoke performance by Alex McLeod and Brianna Lowe, it was heartwarming to see people actually looking though and reading the publications, as opposed to the back-turned-to-the-art kind of socializing you often see at gallery openings. It really proved the sustained interest people have in reading and engaging with physical works of writing and images.
Shelf Life will be exhibited until March 29th and complimented by a number of events over the next couple weeks as listed below:
